Guidelines for Safe Use of the Drug Zyban as a Quit Smoking Medication

The correct Zyban dosage is essential if you want to use it as a quit smoking medication and protect yourself from side effects.

The drug Zyban is chemically the same as Wellbutrin which is prescribed for anxiety and depression symptoms. These two drugs should not be used together or you will exceed the safe recommended dose and be vulnerable to some of the more serious buproprion side effects such as seizures.

If you have made the decision to quit cigarette smoking using the drug Zyban you might be interested in these facts about the dosage of the drug also known as Wellbutrin or buproprion.

As an stop smoking drug, Zyban is supplied in sustained release tablets. Sustained release means that the active chemical, buproprion, is encapsulated in teeny tiny pills (that is my highly technical term) that are all glued together into one tablet.

Each of the teeny tiny pills has a different thickness or type of coating so that the coatings all dissolve at different rates.

In your stomach, once the big tablet breaks up into the individual pills, there is a consistent rate of delivery of the drug into your system as all the teeny tiny pills dissolve.

This seems to be the best way to please the brain and reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms when you are trying to quit smoking.

You will get the best results from the quit smoking drug Zyban if you take it properly and keep the levels of the drug in your system constant.

Drug references are consistent in the recommendations for dosage. You can take this as information to help you be an informed consumer but make sure to read the package insert that comes with your stop smoking medication or any medication for that matter.

Guidelines for Safe Use of the Drug Zyban
as a Quit Smoking Medication

  • No single dose should ever exceed 150 mg.

  • Dosages should not exceed 300 mg per day. This would be two sustained release tablets spaced evenly in the 24 hour period.

  • The drug Zyban takes about one week at 150 mg per day to reach high enough concentrations in your blood to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms. So if you choose to use this quit smoking medicine you start it about one week before you take your last cigarette.

In order to get the correct Zyban dosage do not crush, cut, or chew the tablets as this alters the sustained release mechanism and may release too much buproprion into your system leaving you vulnerable to the serious buproprion side effects that can occur at higher dosages.

NEVER take Zyban and Wellbutrin together as they are the same drug and you will be double dosing yourself.

There is no such thing as a risk free drug.

Some serious buproprion side effects have been reported.
