Is Smoking What Causes Hypertension?

Is smoking what causes hypertension? The smoking facts reveal that smoking has not been confirmed as one of the causes of high blood pressure even though one of the immediate effects of nicotine is a rise in blood pressure. Hardening of the arteries is one of the known smoking effects on the body and this may contribute to high blood pressure levels.

Smoking a cigarette will raise your blood pressure within minutes. This is because of the immediate effects of nicotine.

As a vasoconstrictor nicotine causes your blood vessels to get narrower.

Another significant effect related to blood pressure is an immediate rise in your heart rate.

But these are both short term smoking effects on the body and a short term rise in blood pressure is not how hypertension is defined. You must have high blood pressure readings on three separate occasions taken by the same person in order make a diagnosis of high blood pressure.

Hypertension and Smoking Facts

"It is a paradox that while smoking acutely increases blood pressure, a slightly lower blood pressure level has been found among smokers than nonsmokers in larger epidemiological studies."

Omvik P "How Smoking Affects Blood Pressure"
Blood Press. 1996 Mar;5(2):71-7.

Why is Smoking Not on the List of What Causes Hypertension?

Despite the fact that one of the main smoking effects on the body is a temporary rise in blood pressure there has not yet been conclusive evidence that smoking is what causes hypertension. This is rather paradoxical because one of the main smoking effects on the body is hardening of the arteries which can be a risk factor for hypertension.

Researchers have been trying to explain why studies on large groups of smokers and non smokers do not consistently show an increased prevalence of hypertension among the smoking population. With everything that is known about the smoking effects on the body this is what would be expected.

Some sources list smoking as a cause of high blood pressure and others do not. However, you will find that almost all consumer related information recommends smoking cessation as part of hypertension treatment.

One thing is for certain if you smoke you are already at risk for heart disease, heart failure and stroke. If you continue to smoke with a diagnosis of high blood pressure you amplify your risk.
