Cigarette Smoking Effects on the Body
Smoking Facts About the Harmful Effects of Tobacco

Cigarette smoking effects on the body are the direct result of the chemicals in cigarettes and the harmful effects of tobacco's main ingredient of nicotine.

The smoking facts reveal many short and long term harmful effects of smoking.

Smoking Facts - Short Term Cigarette Smoking Nicotine Effects

smoking facts

In the short term the many harmful effects of tobacco arise from its main ingredient nicotine. These effects start within about 10-20 seconds of nicotine entering the system and can last for up to forty minutes.

  • Your blood vessels constrict and get smaller. This deprives body tissues of life giving and life sustaining oxygen and other nutrients carried by the blood. (If you are a man it also makes getting an erection more difficult.)

  • Your heart rate increases

  • Your blood pressure goes up.

  • Within a few seconds nicotine starts filling up empty neurotransmitter spots on your brain cells (neurons) causing more neurotransmitters to be released. The specific neurotransmitters are believed to be those associated with pleasure and just "feeing good". This is one of the main causes of drug addiction.

  • Your body releases adrenaline from the adrenal gland. This causes a rise in blood pressure, an increase in your heart rate, and release of stored sugar into the blood stream. Since the blood sugar levels go up you may not feel hungry.

Don't be Fooled by Smoking Fiction

In the short term these effects seem to provide a short boost of energy and you can see how you might think that having a cigarette perks you up or provides you with some sort of fortification to get on with your day.

smoking facts and fiction

That of course is smoking fiction as nothing is further from the truth. A short burst of energy from a drug is energy depleting in the long run.

The effects are short lived and you will be faced with getting another hit to provide the same effect and create the same feeling. Eventually your own organs that help to fortify you with bursts of energy will become exhausted from these continual demands and you will need to smoke more and more in order to feel good again.

The smoking facts are that the harmful effects of smoking deplete your body of energy in the long term and here is the evidence!

It is the long term smoking effects on the body that contribute to disease, death and human suffering. These are the real harmful effects of tobacco.
