Facts About Smoking and Beautiful Clear Skin

Concerned about skin care or wrinkles in your face? The effects of smoking cigarettes may reverse any efforts you make to stop skin wrinkles.

The facts about smoking reveal that free radicals in the body donated from every cigarette speed up the aging process and damage your skin making it impossible to achieve the beautiful clear skin you desire.

It is now known that an experienced and well trained eye can tell if a person is a smoker simply by looking at the skin. In fact the changes on the skin caused by smoking are so profound there is a name for it. It has been named "smoker's face".

D Model (1985) Smoker's face: an underrated clinical sign? Br Med J (Clin Res Ed)December 21; 291(6511): 1760-1762.

"Smoker's face" was first identified in 1985 and is characterized by deep lines around the corners of the mouth and eyes, and a grayish cast on the facial skin.

Wrinkling is not the only effect of smoking on the skin, the color and quality of the skin are also altered.

In smokers the skin undergoes changes that suggest an underlying toxicity, which should not be surprising given that over 4000 chemicals in cigarettes have been isolated and identified.

You can spend serious money on creams and emollients for facial skin care. But wrinkles do not occur because of a deficiency of skin care products. They occur because of loss of elasticity of the skin and damage to the structures of the skin.

Loss of elasticity is part of the aging process. If you are a smoker you are hastening this process with every puff of smoke that is known to create harmful free radicals in the body.

Smoking and Free Radicals in the Body

One of the real dangers of smoking is the accumulation of damaging molecules called free radicals. In the body these molecules hasten the aging process, and are thought to be cancer causing as well.

With every puff of cigarette smoke you top up the burden of free radicals in the body.

With the smoke going both inside your body and outside swirling around your face you damage your skin from the inside as well as the outside.

No amount of skin care products slapped on your skin can reverse this if you continue to smoke cigarettes.

Facts About Smoking, Skin Care, and Wrinkles

  • nicotine is a powerful vasoconstrictor and restricts the ability of the blood vessel to deliver oxygen to the skin cells.

  • Smoking and cancer of the skin are linked. Smoking more than triples the risk of developing skin cancers, primarily squamous cell skin cancer because of the thinner skin from smoking and the exposures to free radicals.

  • Because of all the free radicals in the body, smokers have more wrinkles. The skin is under nourished and starved of oxygen and as a result it becomes dry and grey.

  • Wrinkles around the mouth and the eyes occur much earlier in smokers than in non smokers.

  • Aside from sun damage, smoking ages the face faster than anything else.

  • The best way to have beautiful clear skin that is wrinkle free:

    • eliminate the free radicals in your body by giving up smoking, this will stop any further surface skin damage.

    • protect your skin from further free radical damage by using sun screen. You will get a much better result from your skin care products if you are not undoing any good that they might be accomplishing.

If you want radiant, beautiful, clear wrinkle free skin don't smoke.

One of the benefits of quitting smoking is that you will have more cash available. When you quit, take that money and spend it on good products for skin care. The wrinkles you already have might not disappear (sorry - no guarantees) but at least you won't be creating new ones with the toxins and chemicals in cigarettes that create free radicals in the body!
