The Smoking Facts About Cancer of the Kidney and Urinary Bladder Cancer
Renal cancer and bladder cancer are now recognized as cancer diseases
caused by smoking.
Cancer of the kidney occurs twice as often in smokers as non smokers.
Two of the known health risks of smoking are bladder cancer and kidney cancer.
Smoking causes at least half of all new urinary bladder cancer diagnoses every year and
more than half of all cases of renal carcinoma diagnosed each year could be avoided if
cigarette smoking was eliminated.
Because of the presence of the chemicals in cigarettes in the blood, testing can be done on the urine
to determine tobacco exposures.
The urine contains nicotine byproducts, toxins, and carcinogenic
ingredients in cigarettes.
It is not surprising then that both
the kidneys and the urinary bladder are vulnerable to cancer diseases caused by smoking.
Cancer of the Kidney
As early as the 1960's researchers recognized that cancer of the kidney was 38% higher
in smokers than in those who had never smoked.
This statistics were even more startling when women were eliminated from the statistics.
At that time the risk for developing renal cancer was 54% higher in male smokers than in the
male population who had never smoked.
These are pretty staggering statistics for the known body of evidence on cancer diseases
caused by smoking and they are over 50 years old!
Urinary Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is still more common in men than in women, and aside from occupational exposures to certain types of
dyes, cigarette smoking is the single greatest risk factor for urinary bladder cancer.
The health risks of smoking are systemic and can affect every part of your body.
The carcinogenic ingredients in cigarettes have even been isolated
in pancreatic juices and cervical fluid.
This is why pancreatic carcinoma and
cervical cancer are now considered to be diseases caused by smoking.
