What are Psychoactive Drugs?
Chemicals that are known to go directly to your brain and alter brain chemistry are termed "psychoactive".
Effects of psychoactive drugs are usually experienced as alterations in perception, mood, consciousness, and/or thinking and judgment abilities. Because psychoactive drugs change your brain chemistry, you might also act a little differently than you would if you were not "under the influence".
Not all psychoactive drugs have all of these effects.
Psychoactive drugs are used medicinally to treat mood disorders, treat pain and induce the anesthesia needed to perform surgery.
Some psychoactive substances readily available in nature are used recreationally to alter mood and create hallucinations or other psychogenic experiences.
These would be such substances as marijuana, peyote, salvia, datura, and magic mushrooms.
They may or may not be available legally depending on the laws in your country.
Psychoactive Effects of Nicotine
and the Dope on Dopamine
Nicotine in the blood results in an increase of a brain chemical called dopamine. This chemical is known to be part of the "reward circuit" in the brain.
In other words taking this substance produces a feeling that is so good and desirable that your brain directs you to seek out more nicotine.
The mood alteration produced in the brain by the effects of nicotine are not a "high" as with other psychoactive drugs. In fact there is no altered level of consciousness produced by nicotine that would alert others that you are using the drug.
Simply put, you just feel better after using than you did before you had the cigarette.
Since nicotine leaves your system quickly, your desire for another nicotine hit occurs quickly and over time you become conditioned to reach for a cigarette whenever you have low dopamine levels or you just feel the need for a bit of fortification to get on with the day.
Reaching for a cigarette becomes as natural as reaching for a glass of water whenever you are thirsty.
Consequently nicotine dependence can occur quickly in new smokers.
