The E Cigarette
Quitting Smoking Facts about the Electronic Cigarette

The E cigarette promises the user the ability to enjoy the effects of nicotine without the harmful health effects of tobacco smoking such as cigarette tar, or the cosmetic cigarette smoking effects such as smoker's teeth and smoker's face.

The electronic cigarette may deliver the effects of nicotine to smokers without many of the harmful effects of tobacco smoking but the quitting smoking facts, show that these smokeless cigarettes fall short of addressing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural aspects needed in a stop smoking method.

Quitting Smoking Facts

The best stop smoking methods address the addiction from four levels.

  • cognitive level- this level refers to how you think. This website is full of references to smoking addiction fiction which is my way of referring to the distorted way of thinking that keeps smoking addiction going.

  • emotional - the emotional level refers to how you feel. Not how you are feeling at the physical level but rather what your mood is like and what emotions you might be going through as you try to give up smoking cigarettes.

  • behavioural - since you will not be lighting up, inhaling, or even handling the cigarette, behavioural changes are essential when you quit smoking cigarettes.

  • physical - nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the entire detoxification of all the effects of tobacco combustion manifest at both the physical and emotional level. Thankfully for most people they are temporary, but often the unpleasant nicotine withdrawal symptoms are cited by smokers as the reason why they go back to smoking cigarettes again.

It becomes obvious that one of the main quitting smoking facts when using the e cigarette is that you are only addressing the physical level by taking in nicotine to avoid the withdrawal symptoms.

In fact the manufacturers and distributors of the E cigarette would have you believe that by using their product you can continue to do everything you normally did except light a match!

And here is one of the more obvious quitting smoking facts!

If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got!

In order to successfully quit smoking you must make changes in all four domains of human functioning not just the physical one. The electronic cigarette encourages you to change nothing. However, changing the method of drug delivery and nothing else falls short of the requirements for making permanent changes in your life.

There are many other ways that the nicotine can be delivered but the designers have purposefully created a new nicotine delivery system that looks just like the old one because smokers are more likely to purchase the product if it is something that is familiar to them and requires no behavioural, cognitive, or emotional changes.

Safety of the product not-withstanding, the main problem with the e cigarette is that its use perpetuates many smoking fiction messages like:

  • smoking is glamorous

  • smoking is harmless

  • I have a right to smoke where ever I want

  • smoking is a social activity that creates good friendships

  • smoking is comforting and relaxing

  • smoking is a sign of maturity, emancipation, and strength

None of these statements are true or factual. It is the position of www.smoking-facts-and-fiction.com that these are the messages that must be changed if the health of populations is to be improved by reducing smoking incidence and prevalence.

It is for this reason that use of the e cigarette is not endorsed here.
