Information and Smoking Facts about Skeletal Tissue
Is smoking among the causes of osteoporosis?
Information about the smoking facts and the harmful effects of smoking on the body skeleton show
that bones are not immune to the effects of the toxic ingredients in cigarettes.
The lower blood oxygen level in a smoker's body makes it difficult for skeletal tissue to renew itself.
Bones then become brittle and break more easily.
Understanding Osteoporosis
Information About Skeletal Tissue and Bone Health
Did you know that skeletal tissue is living tissue? A human skeleton is comprised of dynamic
living tissue that
requires an oxygen supply in order to stay healthy.
Like other human tissues, bone cells die and are renewed constantly throughout the
life cycle. The renewal of bone cells slows down with advancing age.
A disruption between the fine balance of bone breakdown and renewal is what
causes brittle bones.
The causes of osteoporosis are identified as any factors that
increase the destruction of bone or decrease the making of new bone cells.
Smoking affects skeletal tissue nutrition and healing.
Smokers have been shown to be more susceptible to back
problems especially lower back pain.
Harmful Effects of Smoking on the Body Skeleton
Smoking significantly decreases the delivery of nutrients to all body tissues, even your bones.
Carbon monoxide, is one of the main toxic ingredients
in cigarettes that results in the lower blood oxygen level in the smoker. It readily binds to the hemoglobin in the blood
making it difficult for oxygen to be taken up and distributed to the rest of the body.
This can lower the body oxygen content in a heavy smoker by as much as 15%.
Because of the many toxic
ingredients in cigarettes, smokers have a higher burden of toxicity in their systems which
slows down the healing process.
As a result of all these harmful
smoking effects on the body, there is less overall nutrition being
delivered to the skeletal tissue so there are fewer raw materials delivered to the new bone cells.
As bone cells that complete their natural life cycle die off there are less new bone cells to take their place.
