Causes of Bronchitis
Smoking Facts and Chronic Bronchitis

What are the causes of bronchitis? The smoking facts show that one of main respiratory diseases caused by smoking is bronchitis.

Smokers are more likely to get acute bronchitis and need a longer time to recover.

Chronic bronchitis is what causes emphysema. When chronic bronchitis and emphysema occur together this is called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Bronchitis is sometimes commonly referred to as a "chest cold". When stricken with a cold virus or upper respiratory infection, some people will say "It went into my chest".

What they are really describing is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. The swelling in the tubes causes the typical symptoms of bronchitis that include tightness in the chest, wheezing, and excess mucus production.

With acute bronchitis all these symptoms are short lived and go away once the immune system functions take over and combat the infection.

However in smokers this process may take longer as smokers have a weak immune system.

Chronic Bronchitis - One of the Main Respiratory Diseases Caused by Smoking.

Chronic bronchitis is a little different. It is not caused by a virus or a "head cold". It is caused by constant and ongoing irritation of the bronchial tubes that leads to chronic inflammation. This causes excess mucus to be produced. However, because the normal cleaning mechanism of the lungs is destroyed by the hot cigarette smoke the mucus is very difficult to remove.

This ongoing production of mucus causes smokers cough.

Trapped mucus and constant inflammation causes obstruction and increased pressure in the lungs eventually trapping carbon dioxide filled air in the small lung sacs where air exchange takes place. This is what causes emphysema.

Smoking Facts - Is Smoking Cigarettes What Causes Bronchitis?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes especially in the case of chronic bronchitis.

But even in the acute cases caused by a virus, smoking exacerbates the condition and makes it last longer.

Estimates are that 1 in 20 people in North America have chronic bronchitis and it is responsible for significant absenteeism and loss of productivity in the workplace.

Causes of Bronchitis - Historical Perspective

Throughout history it has been recognized that respiratory illness often results in coughing and excess mucus. An examination of historical medical writings show that pollution and smoke filled air were identified as the main causes of bronchitis in earlier times.

Today chronic bronchitis is recognized as one of one of the main respiratory diseases caused by smoking. Its presence always means that emphysema is developing and the two conditions co-exist together as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Bernard Garston wrote in 1961:
"There is a definite association between cigarette smoking and chronic bronchitis, the factor of having smoked cigarettes at all, for any length of time, being relevant. Cigarette smokers nearly always have an excess of bronchial mucus, which may predispose to chronic bronchitis."
The Natural History, Pathology, and Treatment of Bronchitis
CHEST November 1961 vol. 40 no. 5 530-538

Fifty years later the smoking facts are clear:

"The evidence is sufficient to infer a causal relationship between active smoking and all major respiratory symptoms among adults, including coughing, phlegm, wheezing, and dyspnea."
