Buproprion
Side Effects for the Stop Smoking Medicine Also Known as the Drug Zyban

Buproprion side effects sometimes lead to discontinuation of the drug if they are not tolerated well by the people who take them.

More serious Zyban side effects include seizures. When using this drug as a stop smoking medicine, risks of a serious adverse drug reaction are less if the correct dosage is used.

Clinical trial data shows that when using the drug Zyban as a stop smoking medicine, dry mouth and excessive sweating occur at a rate about 7-9% higher than study participants who were given the placebo. (Yes, even the study participants who do not get the "real" drug can experience side effects).

Blurred vision can also occur.

Why do these Buproprion Side Effects Occur?

The blurred vision, dry mouth and excessive sweating are related to the anticholinergic properties of the drug. Zyban influences some specific chemicals that regulate these more "automatic" functions of the body.

Technically there is no such thing as a side effect. Drugs and chemicals only have effects.

For a more detailed explanation of what adrenergic effects are see the explanation of How Zyban Works.

It is the central nervous system side effects of Zyban such as tremors and agitation that are the most the most common reasons the drug is discontinued.

These Zyban side effects are most likely due to the adrenergic effects of the drug.

Skin rash also occurs in some people and discontinuation of the drug may be necessary.

Serious Adverse Drug Reaction Associated with the Use of Buproprion

There is no such thing as a risk free drug.

Seizures are among the most serious buproprion side effects. The recognition of the relationship of buproprion to seizures actually caused the withdrawal of the medication from the market after it was first introduced as an antidepressant medication (Wellbutrin).

However, seizures are seldom reported when Zyban is used as a stop smoking medicine because it has been determined that keeping the dose of buproprion below 300mg per day greatly reduces the possibility of a serious drug reaction like a seizure.

The risk of seizure is about .1% or one in 1000.

Those might seem like pretty good odds to the 999 people who take the drug Zyban and do not get a seizure. But if you are that one person out of the thousand that took it and it caused a seizure you would probably think that the risk was too high.
