I am a nurse who has witnessed the health effects of
smoking both professionally and personally.
Global smoking facts reveal that everyone on the planet will be touched by the
health effects of smoking at some point in their lifetime.
Nicotine has been proven to be a psychoactive drug.
You can stop smoking cigarettes if you examine your own smoking fiction, change your attitude and beliefs, and address the smoking addiction like any other drug addiction.
So here are the smoking facts about me.
I am a nonsmoker.
I am a nurse.
I have a keen interest in health promotion.
Like most health care professionals I have witnessed the health effects of smoking in patients in my care. Ask any
health care professional and they can tell you stories about the true devastation and human suffering caused by tobacco addiction.
Everything from nicotine poisoning in children who eat cigarette butts to
smokers who choose to continue with their smoking addiction even while suffering the devastating effects of diseases caused by smoking like:
I was always under the assumption that a person would want to be healthy so watching people in my care continue to make health denying decisions
was perplexing.
Always fascinated by the true motives for human behaviour I took some courses in health psychology
during graduate studies where I learned that most decisions made by humans are driven by emotions and
not logic or statistical probabilities.
Of course
the tobacco marketing companies have known this all along and smoking advertisements play to your
emotions in order to influence you to start smoking. (See Why Do People Smoke)
Those emotions and beliefs of course are the foundation for the
smoking fiction that is referred to so often on this site and forms the most important part of the
title of the site www.smoking-facts-and-fiction.com
Smoking fiction is more important than smoking facts in the quit smoking decision.
WHY? Because you must change the beliefs that you have about yourself, your cigarettes, and your smoking
addiction so you have the power you need to be successful with your decision to stop smoking cigarettes.
All behaviour change requires a fundamental shift
in the way you think and in what you believe to be true. Quitting smoking is no different.
If this website can contribute is some small way to helping one person to stop smoking cigarettes it will have been a worthwhile effort for me.
